LETAS ANNOUNCES AZORES LADIES OPEN

Giving a boost to the 2011 Ladies European Tour Access Series, organisers today announced a new tournament to be staged in the Azores Islands.

The inaugural Azores Ladies Open will be staged this December 2-4 at Campo de Golf de Batalha in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal.

A field of up to 84 competitors will play the 54-holes strokeplay event and the total prize fund is €25,000, sponsored by the Azores Tourist Board.

“The Azores Ladies Open will be the first LET Access Series to be held in Portugal and we thank the Azores Tourist Board for their commitment to this event. Campo de Golf de Batalha will be a stunning venue and we look forward to bringing some of the world’s most promising female golfers to the Azores,” said

LETAS Director Diane Barnard. The event Promoter, Antonio Carmona Santos, added: “We are delighted to bring to the Azores the first ladies professional tournament played in this Portuguese region.

“These beautiful islands are the ideal place to play golf due to its mild temperatures and breathtaking scenery. The venue at Batalha Golf Course on the Sao Miguel Island is a wonderful piece of land with lots of wild flowers and its interesting design makes it a good test of golf. What better way to promote a top quality global golf destination than by showcasing elite women professional golfers.

“Being the last tournament of the year we all look forward to watching the competition which will secure the top places of the LET Access Series in 2011 and award the winners with the 2012 Ladies European Tour cards”.

Campo de Golf de Batalha staged the 2008 Azores Seniors Open on the European Seniors Tour and was won by Australian Stewart Ginn.

The venue is certain to be popular with players, set in a breathtaking landscape on São Miguel, known as ‘The Green Island’: the largest and most populated island of the Azores in the North Atlantic Ocean, between Portugal and North America. Its geography features beautiful lakes, sandy beaches, rolling hills, high mountains and views of the ocean.

The new event brings to seven the number of events on the 2011 calendar, following the addition of the recent LETAS Ladies Open in the UK.

About the LET Access Series:

The LET Access Series (LETAS) launched in 2010 as the official feeder tour to the Ladies European Tour. The objective of LETAS is to provide greater playing opportunities for female professional golfers. All female professional golfers and amateurs with a handicap of 3 or better are eligible for membership of LETAS, providing they are over 18 years of age. The top two players on the 2011 LETAS Ranking will earn membership of the Ladies European Tour for the 2012 season, while players in third to tenth positions will have the opportunity to progress to the final stage of LET Qualifying School, thereby skipping the first qualifying event. If the top two players are already exempt for the Ladies European Tour then the cards will be available to the next best players inside the top 10 on the 2011 LETAS Ranking. If a player in third to tenth position is already exempt to Final Qualifying School for the 2012 Ladies European Tour season, then the next non-exempt player down to 25th position on the 2011 LETAS Ranking will be offered a place at LET Final Qualifying School.
